My drive is getting a bit full, and a bit long in the tooth so I wanted to put in a 500GB Seagate one that I bought and haven't used yet. Last time I tried to put the new drive in and restore from a system image, it didn't work and I had an error message about the drive. Sony told me you can only use the exact same drive. I've read elsewhere that cloning to the new drive should get round this,...

I performed a clean install of 32-bit Win7 Ultimate on my Asus netbook with a student/faculty version. I think this is similar to a retail version of the OS. I have identified a better option for this under powered hardware and prefer to uninstall the Win7 entirely. I may hold the Win7 in reserve until I build or, purchase a higher-level pc or, I may find a person more needy than I to donate...

I've downloaded Windows 7 and made a bootable USB drive. I installed Windows on a couple of PC's and my HP laptop. I've noted that when installing on laptop, I've had some issues. In BIOS settings, the boot mode was selected to UEFI and no matter the boot sequence, it just wouldn't boot from USB (note: there was a USB Hard Drive and a USB Generic Volume option and I've checked the 'boot from USB...

What happens to old disc licence after new install?

This might sound like a silly question but - if I put a new hard drive in my laptop and do a clean install with a retail Windows 7 disc I have, and then activate it (hopefully) with the OEM product code of the laptop, will the old disc with all the software and files on, become inactive if I then needed to put it back (ie if for some reason my laptop didn't run well with the new drive)? I'm...

I've done a clean install on a new hard drive on a Sony Vaio VPCC and am having overheating problems (the laptop keeps turning off when it gets too hot, so I haven't even completed Windows updates). Just wondered if anyone had any suggestions. It's happened twice now with the new drive installed - once when I had cloned the old drive onto it, and now with the clean install. When I put the...

I just got a computer from ebay and it came with Win7. I boot it and it doesn't have any password. Once in I go to Manage Accounts, Change an Account, Create Password for the Admin and put in a password in the "Confirm new password" field (odd that). Then I click "Create password" . . . and it goes forever, thrashing the disk, finally saying "Not Responding." What's wrong? What should I have done?

I have removed all necessary files from each user account on the Win7 install so, I am ready to replace it with the new, smaller OS. However, I have realized I do not know how to properly remove Windows to ensure it authenticates correctly when I install it on another computer.
